Future Appearances
What comes next?  I won't know until someone invites me. Science fiction conventions, writing conferences, schools -- you name it. Come on, do I have to beg?

About My School Visits
I love doing school visits. How did you know?

The majority of my magazine publications are for 2nd grade and under. However, I do have material for kids up to 6th grade. I will provide copies of my publications, which must be returned after the visit.

A typical classroom visit is 1-1/2 to 2 hours. This includes time for me to read something I wrote, lecture, take questions, and do a writing exercise with the students. Obviously, a visit for really young kids is planned differently, but I still try not to do any visit in less than 45 minutes.

My lecture is about 20 minutes and covers:  how I choose material; my writing schedule; drafts and revision; the submission process; how publishing works as a collaborative industry. The younger the students, the shorter the lecture will be.

Writing exercises may be collaborative, with the whole class developing a story together, or it may be more like a game with surprise writing prompts. I work closely with teachers to develop this portion of the visit.

My rates are very reasonable, $50 for a visit to one classroom in Spokane or the surrounding communities, $100 if I have to drive more than half an hour to reach your school. I need to be reimbursed for gasoline and hotel, if any. In addition, I can do a group package for several classrooms in the same school. We can negotiate that.
Why do I charge
for school visits?

1) I have to take time off from my day job, plus I usually lose some writing time due to preparations for each visit.

2) Gas isn't getting any cheaper these days. (You've probably noticed.)

3) But possibly most important, people simply don't value things they get for free. When the school is paying to have me, the teachers are prepared, the students are excited, and the whole experience is much more pleasant. If I come to schools for free, my visit is treated as an afterthought. Not so good for my ego.

Writers are professionals who deserve to be paid for our expertise. I'm sure you understand.
School Visits
I look forward to visiting Skyway Elementary, in the Coeur d'Alene School District, in January and Feburary of 2012.
